Muffler Discoloration

Muffler has what looks like black soot areas on each side. Is this normal for the 2.3 turbo?

the photo is too much of a close up for me to get a context of what parts have and what doesn't

Hard to get a good pic, can't get far enough away since it is the muffler and took the pic laying down with phone on the floor. The build up is on each side of the muffler, I assume it is from the exhaust, there is some soot in the pipe. Another poster said direct injection does produce black soot.
