Lincoln & the MKC - Taking Stock & Looking Forward to 2016

The end of the year is approaching and that gives good reason to take stock of how Lincoln is doing during this period of renewal, how the MKC is doing as a part of the Lincoln brand and what we can expect from the brand in 2016.

11 months through the year Lincoln has seen its sales increase by 6.6% when compared to the same point last year. This puts the brand in a position to sell over 100,000 vehicles next year. That would mark the first time the company has achieved that feat since 2008.

The Lincoln MKC has been an important part of that sales success. Priced at $34,185, it is the cheapest model in the lineup. That more attainable option has allowed Lincoln to decrease the average age of its customers from 67 to 58. The model has seen more than twice as many sales this year when compared to last with a total of 22,024 units sold so far this year.

Though the MKC debuted with a significant design flaw, shift and start/stop buttons placed beside radio controls, that recall has been the only bump in the road really. Small fuel pump and wind shield bubbling issues also warranted recalls, but those affected a small number of vehicles.

The original centre console design.

The Lincoln lineup will expand in 2016 with the addition of three new models. One of those is the Continental full-size sedan, and while the other two have not been announced, speculation would point towards a mid-size crossover (called the Aviator?) and a small sedan to fight the 3-Series. The Continental has also debuted a new grille for the brand. It appears that all vehicles will transition to this new grille style, though the currently sold MKC and MKX still are sporting the split-wing grille.

The emphasis on the Continental is likely a decision that has been made along with the plan to construct many dealerships in China next year -- one every ten days by some accounts. The Chinese have a preference for those large luxury sedans.

So the MKC has continued to gain in popularity and attract younger buyers to Lincoln. it will be joined by a larger SUV next year but will continue to sport the split-wing grille until it undertakes a facelift or redesign. A large sedan and an expansion in China complete a picture of what to expect from Lincoln next year.

Gee, some better reliability and consistency in the C along with a much better service experience, and the elimination of combo Ford/Lincoln dealerships would be most helpful. If you own a 2015 C, do you really care about what they are doing in China? I'd rather see them spend their resources and get their act together in the US. Oh, and I must comment about the "only bump in the road" was the location of the gear shift buttons. They should ask some of the forum members if that was the only bump in the road they experienced.

The problem with articles that are written by auto magazines and the like, is that they have test drive the car for a day, or a couple days or maybe a week, and that just doesn't cut it, does it Moretti?

Have to agree with you DK4500. Based on what I have read here there have been a lot more bumps in the road than just the location of the start/stop button. I love my MKC but if I had come across this forum and read all the problems that owners have encountered before I bought it...I'm not so sure that I would have the MKC now. Prior to the MKC I have owned 3 Toyotas and a Lexus and never had a problem with any of them. And I had excellent service at the dealership. A few have said that they have had much better experience dealing with a Lincoln only dealership rather than a Ford/Lincoln dealership. I just did a quick search and did not find any Lincoln only dealerships in this area. Even in a city the size of Toronto.....there are not any Lincoln only dealerships.

I wouldn't exactly call the MKC cheap either. Here in Canada, the base price starts at $39,000 but with all the options mine ended up at $55,000 plus tax.

I've been saying for a little while that once all the mkcs get sold and out there we will really start to see the real world problems. And they are definitely getting sold because I see them ALL the time now. I'm no longer "exclusive" here. Out last weekend in northern NJ and a Christmas place in NY I saw 2 mkcs in one parking lot. If I'd have driven we would have had three in one place! Three not at a dealership LOL.

Well if you read my app thread the app update that Lincoln said would fix my problem that came out yesterday did NOT take my error away. It will take a few days to test the remote access as that seems to die randomly, sometimes working for a few days, sometimes working only an hour. But based on what is happening (my Lincoln mobile is deactivating itself for some unknown reason) I'm not guessing this app update had anything to do with that. Now what?

The update did finally fix my screen so I can see everything though. And hey they put the name greeting back in the home screen, now it greets me by name and time of day again. Try and focus on the positive LOL.

It seems that the majority of the people on this type of site are the ones with problems. Out of the thousands of vehicles sold this is miniscule. I have been very satisfied with my Taurus, Grand Marquis, Marauder, Flex, MKC. Have I been lucky or are they just making excellent vehicles ?

Think it is partly luck or bad luck. If you read the other thread commenting about Eagle(jeep) cars I owned one trouble free for 275K, 9 years. Another person 34 trips to the dealer in 3 years! Can happen to anyone, any car...guess it's just my turn

I've been extremely lucky too I guess as this is the first car I'm getting hammered on in 6 brand new car purchases. I joined this forum because I was desperate to get answers to the very unique problems I've been having. Even if my problems were solved and I got my answers I would still continue to participate. Not EVERYONE on here is having problems thank goodness but it's a great resource to get answers and an idea on if you are alone in your issues.

Mmoretti, based on the screen image with the time out message it seems like your MKC is not being able to get a signal from the smart phone. Where is the car parked when you are having the problems with the auto start? in a garage? what kind of surroundings? Have you tried using the auto start with the car parked outside or at a different location? The car not getting a signal is just like when your cell phone can't get a signal.

Yes, based on my conversations with Ford's In-Vehicle Tech team, remember that the app and modem are only as good as the cellular signal you're getting. I had a different carrier earlier this year and couldn't get the app to start the car, lock or unlock it from inside my house (not to mention just using my phone from inside the house for other reasons...). I switched carriers and the signal in my house is much better now. However, it also depends on where the car is parked which is receiving the signal. I can literally move my car to different positions on my street and sometimes the app functions will work and sometimes not - this is due to cellular signal strength variance where the car is parked. For instance, I also can't get the app to work remotely if I've parked in an underground parking structure because the car's modem cell reception is weak there even if the signal is good where I'm standing and trying to send the command. And the number of bars on your phone really means nothing...

Yes, these cars have had some infancy issues, but bear in mind the tech loaded into these cars compared to cars from the 90's (although I had a couple 80's Chryslers which were rebranded Mitsubishis and they had a lot for their day). Also, remember that some issues like the placement of the start/stop button were not a functional defect or malfunction - that was a manufactured paranoia on some peoples' parts that Ford's lawyers elected to take the path of least resistance to address. Several of us had absolutely no problem with the original design. I actually preferred the button on the bottom of the gear selector and thought it the height of silliness that they made me change it.
