North American International Auto Show in Detroit

I am a car dork. I went to the NAIAS today. Here are my thoughts...

Best brand new car- Lincoln Continental. I expected it to be larger, but I think I was thinking about Conti's of old. Still the most impressive new car; the interior even more so than the exterior.

Best refresh- Ford Fusion.

Best Concept- Buick Avista. They need to build this car and call it Riviera.

Best seats- Nissan Maxima. Super adjustable and super supportive.

Best display area- Lincoln. The Lincoln logo shaped lattice and the cream and cherry wood floor were beautiful. The Black Label room was nice and felt super fancy and elegant. The entire display made it seem special.

Worst display area- Toyota. No or low platforms with cars crammed into rows on carpet. Blech. Looked like an auto show pic from 25 years ago. And the lighting was so bright, i think my transitions lenses were turning.

Worst lighting- FCA- Chrysler/Fiat/Dodge/Ram/Alfa. The lights changed with the sound effects. Sometimes it was so dark it was hard to see the cars. My eyes were constantly adjusting. Maybe I am getting to be an old and cranky man.

Biggest disappointment- BMW. I couldn't tell many of them apart. Most seem way over priced. Maybe I would have to drive one to be fair. Runner up- Lexus. See description for BMW.

Surprises-

Fiat 500x- not as gimmicky as it looks in pictures. Nicely done interior.

Genesis G90- I felt like I just won the Apprentice.

Interior of the Kia Optima- Very premium. I love diamond stitched leather.

Buick Envision- looked premium and European. Right-size.

Chevy Malibu- nicely done. Attractive. Take the best styling cues from Optima and Chrysler 200. Fantastic interior.

Honda Civic- larger than expected. Nice interior. More of a compact+.

Best looking models- FCA.

Best looking product specialist- Nissan.

Worst product specialist for a thousand reasons- Cadillac. This guy was Beverly Leslie. He had snow white hair. He had the ever so 1970's pinky ring. Come on, Cadillac. You've come so far shedding the old man car image. Why the regression?

Most annoying models/product specialists - Lincoln. They were loud and laughing with the public like they were at a loud bar.

Most ashy/ dry kneed model- I don't remember the car she was in front of because all I kept thinking is how bad she needed some CeraVe and how much those knees must hurt!

Complete Snooze fest- completely.
Acura
Infinity
VW
Toyota
Scion
Mercedes-Benz
Subaru
Smart

Honorable mentions, just random cars I liked-
Volvo XC90
Volvo XC60
Honda Fit- so big for a little car.
Nissan Maxima- I like this car. A lot.
Alfa Romeo Giulia- I love saying Quadrifoglio.
Fiat 124 Spider
Audi A3, A4, Q5
Chrysler 200- very premium interior, esp for the segment.
GMC Acadia
Lincoln MKZ 2017 refresh

So these are my thoughts. What are yours? Agree or disagree?

CanYouMKCmeNow...great write up and model review,it will be in Toronto and I intend to head over with friends and check things out....I'm intrigued with the Lincoln Continental, photos I've seen so far I killed...still on the french with the new grille,The interior looks stunning, can't wait!
I'm very interested in the Volvo XC90....all reviews I read on are are pretty positive, still not sure on it's body lines, but then Volvo never was cutting edge with body style, although they seem to be getting away from the "boxy" styles.
I've seem pics of most of the brands/models you mentioned...but it's quite different seeing them in person...was the floor crazy busy? usually the one in Toronto is HUGE and very busy place, all week long...
Thanks for the review!

I got there today at 10:20 am. There was no parking anywhere. I ended up parking at my work and taking the People Mover (an above ground train that takes you through downtown Detroit) over to Cobo Center. It was very busy but comfortable. Despite what you may hear, Detroiters are pretty friendly and courteous at events like these. I had a lot of fun and so glad I got to go.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. I was having too much fun getting in and out of cars. But my friend did. As soon as I get the photos I will post them.

I went on Tuesday.

I thought the new Continental is very ugly. I like the MKX, but the Titanium Edge is nearly the same.

The hit of the show for me was the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio. Fantastic style, proper dimensions for a true sports sedan, off the chart power to weight and every conceivable go fast bit. The Ford GT350R, BMW M2 and Porsche Cayman GT4 were honorable mentions.

My dealer told me they have 2 GT350R....on order, expecting them sometime early spring they tell me.
Goes to show you though, see that's 2 totally diverse views from 2 different members.....one likes the Continental, the other thought it's very ugly! todd92....what did you not like with the Conti? did you find it garish? too much chrome? proportions not right...love to hear the reasons, thanks todd92

Garage
Got to see a "mini" car show at ft Myers airport this week. They had high end luxury cars displayed all over. No one in the airport so I could look (except my husband yelling at me to keep moving through the airport LOL)

Finally saw the new Maserati up close and the interior....huge screen. Almost looks like a tesla interior. The exterior design is nothing overwhelming though imo.

Everyone talking about the Volvo and although I love their safety and tech there has never been one Volvo car I thought looked cool. No offense to anyone but I've always found them to be literally UGLY. I don't know exactly, the boxiness, lack of anything eye catching, station wagon-ish.... Just never been my cup of tea. Too bad though because the rest of the car and features look awesome.

My mom & dad were Volvo fans...dad had several over the years...us kids always hated how they looked...
One of my clients bought herself a Tesla S...and took me for a spin...insane power and pickup, incredible upscale interior...did NOT like the size of the Tablet screen...it's just so huge...car was whisper quiet...she also bought the two charging stations...the overnight trickle charge...and the faster 2 hr full charger...I had asked her if she had any problems with it so far...said the retracting seat mechanicals to the driver's seat had to be replaced because they just jammed...paint is exquisite no orange peel effect of any sort...it compares to paints found on Rolls Royce....Maseratti are beautiful sedans...heavy but beautiful....did I mention expensive!
