LED Vs Xenon/HID Headlights

Which headlights are better? LED or Xenon/HID?

I have always thought that LED headlights looks cooler (because it is newer) and nicer at night, but it seems that Toyota says that Xenon is better.

I've looked at Toyota's newest 2016 sedan flagship, the Avalon Limited, and it offers Xenon headlights. Its lower model, the Touring, gets LED instead. Plus, a Corolla gets standard LED headlights. I am confused.

If Xenon headlights are indeed better, then I'm really happy that I got them in my MKC.

MKC does not offer Xenon headlights, only HID with LED tail lamps on all 2015 versions. I can't vouch for 2016. I don't know which headlight is better, but my other car (4 years old) has Xenon and they seem to be considerably brighter then my MKC's HID.

I thought HID or Xenon headlights are the same. According to Wikipedia in the headlamp section:

"Automotive HID may be called "xenon headlamps", though they are actually metal-halide lamps that contain xenon gas. The xenon gas allows the lamps to produce minimally adequate light immediately upon start, and shortens the run-up time. The usage of argon, as is commonly done in street lights and other stationary metal-halide lamp applications, causes lamps to take several minutes to reach their full output."

In the early German Xenon headlights, there was a slight hue of purplish in some angle and at certain distance. The newer ones seem more whitish with some clean clear light blue in some angle.

In general the terms are equivalent except in the marketplace where some sellers of halogen bulbs that (may) contain some xenon use the term HID incorrectly.

Re the LED vs HID question, I have the stock HIDs on out MKC, and the stock LEDs on my Cadillac (ELR). Driving at night I don't perceive much (if any) difference, although I've never parked the two alongside each other and tried to compare.

And while the auto high beam feature on both cars is nice to have and works unexpectedly well, we do miss our Lexus' swiveling the lights when cornering. That feature should be trivial to implement with LEDs. Maybe that will happen when we finally get the high-tech lighting starting to be available in EU.

Also had the turning headlamps on the CTS. Nice feature but probably expensive in terms of putting motors in the headlight assembly and the sensors and software to run it. I could see it in the tech package. The led headlamps I've seen tend to be multiple diodes emitting light which may make it even more complicated and costly. Maybe some version of a stationary led driven cornering lamp is the answer. Remember cornering lamps?

HID's for the win in my books....very bright, nice saturation and in my opinion way better than led's.I have seen enough Audi''s led burned out of fronts....so not sure how long lasting they are, I was under the impression that they last,but not sure how to explain the burnt ones I have seen!

I'm surprised how many people "flash" their high beams at me at night thinking my high beams are on when they are not. I don't know if the regular HIDs are just that bright, or whether it's a combo of those and the LED running lights down on the bumper. I had the swivelling HIDs on my previous MKZ (2011) and I don't recall as much flashing from oncoming cars. And this is in the city, where there's lots of ambient light; not rural.

It's ironic because I have a real pet peeve about drivers in the city driving around with high beams on when that is totally unnecessary in that environment. Or I often think they are high beams... Some of the current light systems, both OEM & aftermarket, are so bright it's hard to tell. What infuriates me though, is when you CAN tell that another car's high beams are on and you flash them repeatedly and they do nothing! Do they think they really need those beams in the middle of a major city? Do they not know what that little blue indicator is for in their instruments?? Sadly, I know what the answer is...

My pet peeve as well....love the feature in the mKC auto dimming...and I always dim my lights to oncoming traffic if I am driving say, the Mustang. it's a simply curtesy!
