9 and 10 speed transmissions

I was reading the topic on the new 2.0 liter engine and understand the concern of wanting the newer engine with most likely more HP and better gas mileage.

I was also wondering when the new 9 and 10 speed transmissions that Ford is developing with GM are going to introduced? The six speed is almost old school these days when the Audi Q5 and others are using 8 speeds.

The new 2.0 liter engine and the new transmission would bet great for gas mileage.

I for one don't want all the complexity and weight of a 7 or more gear xmission. With 305 lb.ft. of torque why do you need 6 plus gears?

It is supposed to end up increasing fuel efficiency even with the extra weight. People have mostly good things to say about them.

VW is also working on a 10 speed, so it seems eventually 8+ speeds and CVTs will be pretty standard.

I know the size is an issue, and I'd think the MPG testing. A lot of people commute on the highway at 80+, but EPA testing doesn't go anywhere near that so to get the benefits of the extra gears on the window sticker you have to figure out how to allocate your 10 speeds in a narrower range.

To match reality, 10th gear should be optimized for 80-85 mph IMO

no

it's the other way around, you use lower gears for towing, those gears allow you to have more power at a lower speed.

My belief was that the driving force behind this was fuel efficiency.

I do remember reading something about the possibility of providing another low end gear. I guess it would be a similar idea to big rig transmissions as far as pulling a heavy load from stop, but like the previous poster said that would be on the low end.

My Corvette has a 6 speed transmission and both 5th and 6th are overdrives. Even with 350 h.p. you can't use 6th until your going over 70mph. At 85mph I'm running 1,800 rpm in 6th. Lower gears are for hills and towing, not higher gears. All more gears do is help keep the engine in the sweet spot like a variable speed transmissions does.

Wow those are some tall final gears. Guess you're just going to have to go everywhere at 85+
