The check engine light came on a few days ago, but the MKC was still humming along nicely, so I checked and my oil life is still at 39%, oil change is due in 1k miles or next month whichever comes first... And then the problems began. I was parked in a parking garage, and started the car up, and immediately it said "coolant temp too high" or something like that on the left side display of the dash. I noticed that the guage for temperature was not showing any temp. So, I pulled over, turned the engine off, and checked the coolant level, it was fine. I felt the plastic box with my hand, and it did not feel hot at all (and I'm guessing it's ok to touch that even if it is hot or it wouldn't be plastic right?).
Turned it back on and low and behold it still gave the same error. I drove the car home, everything ran fine, except the AC was blowing out hot air, not cold, so I shut off the AC. I'm guessing the car regulates itself by shutting down things like the AC when it feels the engine is too hot.. but i could be wrong.
Next morning, I go to start it, and everything is NORMAL. No check engine light. No coolant error, temp guage is working again, AC works great, car runs normal. Then the next day (yesterday), it goes back to its old naughty self again, so I just shut it off, and drove my partner's Fusion hybrid to Costco instead.
Fast forward to today, go out there, and I go to start the car and the starter must have ran for a good 15-20 seconds before the engine started. Then even after the engine was on, the display said "press down brake to start" even though the car was started. About 10 seconds later, it finally figured out that the engine was running and that message went away and was replaced by the coolant temp message. Made a quick trip to Starbucks and back, engine was acting a little skiddish at first, but then it was fine after a bit.
I'm guessing, and it's just a theory, one or more of the sensors is malfunctioning. But I do have a service appointment for Friday. So frustrating sometimes with Lincoln, we only have ONE stealership in all of our county (San Diego), so we don't have the luxury of calling multiple places to see who can get us in first. They said I could bring it in sooner, but no loaners are available until Friday.. Can't be without the car for that long, on the other hand it's not really working very well right now so I probably shouldn't be driving it.
Just curious if anyone else has had the coolant temp issue and was it the sensor or something else causing it?
