Ford announced this week that it is replacing the head of its Lincoln division.

Kumar Galhotra, the automaker's current vice president of Engineering, will take the reigns of Lincoln on September 1st.

Ford CEO Mark Fields said:

"Now is the right time for the next chapter in accelerating Lincoln as a world-class luxury brand. Kumar has more than 25 years of global product and business experience, including leading engineering for all of our Lincoln vehicles today. Being our dedicated senior Lincoln leader will serve our clients, employees and dealers extremely well going forward.
Jim Farley had been leading the Lincoln brand since 2012, but he will now revert to his role as executive vice president of marketing-sales and service.

/pedantics ;)

Farley was not really in charge of the brand, simply lending an extra hand, he will still lead the marketing for them.

This move is excellent for one simple reason, Galhotra is an engineer. For too long the auto industry has dawdled because we had bean counters and lawyers in the leading roles. You need car guys in those positions, people willing to fight for great product, guys who know that product leads brand not the reverse...

More importantly Galhotra was head of Ford's Asia Pacific Division for several years, right man at the right time as Lincoln hopes to romp in China?

What I think we're going to see from Lincoln moving forward is product planning with Pac-Asia in mind, its clear that region is going to be the leading source of growth for Lincoln in the future...
