Driving home today the gas gauge was showing less than 1/4 remaining and the miles to empty was about 85 km. I had only driven about 295 km since my last fill up so obviously not getting very good gas mileage which is not unexpected considering the cold weather and the car idling a lot to warm up. The tank size is 60 litres. When I filled up the tank the gas pump first clicked off at about 35 litres. I continued to fill and it then clicked off at 38 litres. According to the manual once the pump clicks off one or two times, you should stop filling. So adding 38 litres out of a tank capacity of 60 litres means I only used 63% of the total capacity and therefore I think the gas gauge should have been showing about 1/3 of a tank remaining but yet it was showing less than 1/4...has anyone else noticed this kind of discrepancy i.e. there is a lot more gas in the tank than what the gauge is actually displaying? I know that a reserve amount is built in but this seems to be too large of a discrepancy.

I noticed the same thing in mine...especially when I am driving to Toronto...I don't trust the gauge readings, so I usually stop on my way and top up to full...I find that some newer gas pumps overwhelm the filler neck on the MKC and clicks off...I usually do not pump MAX pressure when I am past the half way mark, this usually gives me a full tank.
Not exactly sure how much gas is designated as "reserve fuel" usually it's around a gall...maybe the tank was set up to give more "reserve" than normal...Looks like Lincoln is enlarging the gas tank and by another gallon or so for the 2017 model year.

One of the problems you get when you keep trying to top off the tank, the gasoline will eventually backup into the emissions system, which creates terrible fumes. I had this happen about 30 years ago in a Subaru, and then last week on my 2014 Escape. Good thing I got rid of the Escape for the MKC this past Monday. No more gas smell!
