***UPDATES*** P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire | Slowly Losing Coolant Over Time | Oil Still Clean (So Far) | 37,000 Miles

I have less than 38,000 miles right now and bought it with 30K in December 2021. For the first time since I bought it, these last few mornings I noticed a temporary roughness that went away within a few seconds upon starting it (no CEL or codes), but this time it finally threw a code with a check engine light. My dealer can’t get me in until May 16, luckily I own other vehicles so I can still get to where I need to be.


My immediate thought is the beginning of a blown head gasket that these engines are becoming notoriously known for but I’m surprised cylinder 1 is having the issue. Usually the coolant intrusion affects cylinder 2 or 3, in the middle of the engine. As many have experienced, my coolant level has gradually disappeared over the last several months with no leaks. The underside of the oil cap is very clean and not chocolate milk as I’ve seen with other 2.0 and 1.6 engines with blown head gaskets. The oil reeks of gas but that’s typical for DI engines. I don’t see any noticeable sign of coolant intrusion based on the oil’s state as of now.


Luckily I bought CPO and still have a warranty. I’m not sure what the techs are going to tell me the problem is.

Oh no! I remember talking to you about that when you first bought the car, yeah, I don't think I've seen cylinder one intrusion before.

38,000 mi doesn't seem like enough to have spark plug, coil, carbon buildup issues though, and that leaking coolant is scary. I did see the mustangs with the 2.3 liter were cracking the cylinder walls on the outboard cylinders. But I don't think they tune the MKC motor as strong as they do the mustang

By luck, a cancellation came up and I could take it in this morning. I haven't heard back yet and don't expect to for a few days; I'll be surprised if they contact me tomorrow. I forgot to add that the misfire itself is not too noticeable at idle, but around 2,000 rpm is when it becomes very evident. I'm not sure if coolant intrusion is the problem, but the evidence points to that, especially considering the plummeting track record these second-gen 2.0s have been getting over the last 1-2 years. The earliest case I've heard of a 2.0 experiencing coolant intrusion was a 2019 Edge with 30,000 miles, so I guess 37,000 is possible...

Well... my initial thought was right, it is the beginning of a blown head gasket, based on what the dealer told me. It's strange that cylinder 1 would be the first to experience an issue. It's normally either cylinder 2 or 3, or in the middle of the engine. Because I bought CPO and within warranty, I'm (told) I'm getting a free updated brand-new engine! :D
The engine has been ordered and is supposed to be here in 3-4 days, then another 3 days to put it in. I'm also planning to have a few other things done, such as having the transmission fluid changed.

I got it back last night. They put it in faster than I expected. So far so good. SOOOOO grateful this failure happened under warranty! Prior to purchasing in December 2021 I had no idea the 2.0 was affected by the coolant intrusion issue (and didn't learn about it until around February 2022). At the time I bought it I heard reports of the 1.6 experiencing those issues, but somehow didn't know the 1.5, 2.0 and 2.3 were also affected. Had I known, I would not have purchased the vehicle even though I love it with the exception of some peeves.

I was told no break-in is required, but how can they tell me that if the engine is brand new? I still plan on following the break-in guidelines for the first 1,000 miles as stated in the manual. I also planned on getting the transmission fluid changed but I was told that shouldn't need to be done until 60,000 miles, unlike the 30,000 miles stated in the manual. 60,000 sounds a lot more realistic and is more in line with other vehicles I've owned. Until this car, I'd never heard of a 30,000-mile transmission fluid change interval. That's extremely short. The only other thing I had them change was the cabin air filter because I heard it's difficult to access.

This new engine was assembled at the Valencia plant (like my old one) and this new engine's sticker reads 23C01, translating to Wednesday, March 1, 2023.
My old engine was dated Saturday, December 30, 2017 (17L30).

I would consider an earlier oil change (1st on new engine) than recommended by the OWNERS MANUAL also. There will be engine break-in trash in the oiling system. Evey 5,000 mile intervals after that if a turbo.

Here's the problem. This TRANS design has an non-serviceable filter (trans needs to be disassembled to get to it). This means contaminants and wear particles will accumulate in the sump (return fluid after coolers) and eventually plug the filter and damage the pump.

I would seriously consider the 30,000 mile interval. The drop and fill service replaces only four to five quarts in the trans so it (fluid) will always be somewhat compromised unless a flush service (not a machine reverse flush) is done (and an inline filter @ the outlet tube is installed - to prevent particulates from entering the trans case sump).

It all depends on how long you plan to keep the car.
