welcome lights flash on/off

My mother just picked up a new MKC & says that the welcome lights flash on when the doors are locked. I watched it for a while today. When the door is first locked, they come on & then go off. In about 5 minutes they do the same thing & keep doing this. If the doors are not locked, this does not happen. Any ideas?
