I've always felt like the design department kind of dropped the ball on that. To me the panel and the exhaust treatment doesn't fit with the classy design of the whole vehicle....it actually looks cheap in my view....too much like the Ford Escape.
Imagine driving down the road, meeting an MKC, oohing and aahing over that classy, sleek front end only to glance in the rearview mirror for another look and you're like, "what the he** is that hanging below that beautiful clam shell rear hatch!
They could have and did do better...look at the rear of the 2016 MKX.
I love my MKC and it has been flawless so far....will turn 10K shortly.

Yes. The new MKX is beautiful. Saw it at the car show. Love my MKC but had the MKX been out at purchase I would have went straight to that. Only reason I didn't go MKX was old edge design. Now the MKX is a bigger MKC (what I would have preferred) and the design/body lines are sweet. The new 360 camera that pops out of the front is pretty cool. They are also adding the adaptive headlights and steering to name a few differences. Hoping there will be better wheel choices in the next year or so. If they add a heads up display I'd be completely sold.

Here's a shot of the back of new MKX I snapped at NYC show last month. I didn't take a good shot at the bottom but it appears (I don't remember, looked at so many cars that day) it does have that silver/fake chrome piece underneath in the back..

Yes, I think the panel is still there but the exhaust tips appear to be different. I haven't been able to find a good picture of the full rear of the MKX. From what I have seen, the whole effect seems to have been "softened" a bit.

The MKX does look like a bigger version of the MKC. I haven't really researched the MKX but it looks as though the only engine choice will be a six. I wonder, is it that much bigger that a 2.3 won't haul it around? I'm going to keep an eye on the MKX though as I too could use just a tad more room in the back.

I have thoroughly enjoyed driving my MKC and the mileage is acceptable (if I keep it under 65).

and no engine changes for the 2016 MKC right?
The 2016 MKC will retain the 2.3 L engine but will be dropping the 2.0 L engine that appeared in the 2015 MKC. The new engine also has a 2.0 L displacement but is a twin-scroll turbocharged engine with a similar design to the present 2.3 L engine. It is my understanding that Ford is also making this change for the new Escape as well.

I'm on the fence. At first I liked it until it was brought up about it "cheapening" the vehicle... I kind of agree with that now. It is a very cheap flimsy piece of plastic when you touch it. Not noticeable though from someone looking/driving behind (that it's really cheap and flimsy)

I think all these CUV's get looking butt-heavy if there are not more tones to break up the visual mass back there. So my vote is that the designers did a great job (concept) that was diminished some by the bean counters.

I'm not sure about it "cheapening" the vehicle, if you spend too much time overthinking a small detail you are bound to be conflicted. Maybe the designers thought if its made in black it won't be visible:confused:. Are there any examples of it painted black? Folks over here have been calling for the roof to be painted black as well.
